City Councilman James Oddo has secured $750,000 for a project to beautify the medians along Seaview Avenue in Ocean Breeze. Oddo, flanked by Anthony Ferreri, president and CEO of Staten Island University Hospital, and Steve Elias, president of the Ocean Breeze Civic Association, made the announcement yesterday at the corner of Seaview between Capodanno Boulevard and Mason Avenue.

“This Seaview Avenue beautification project is an extension of the great things done by Borough President Molinaro in revitalizing the South Beach and Midland Beach shoreline areas,” said Oddo. “Seaview Avenue is a gateway thoroughfare and this project will make an otherwise drab median into a lush sea of green.”

The project, part of the city Department of Parks and Recreation’s Green Streets initiative, will plant shrubbery and change concrete to cobblestone on five medians between Hylan and Capodanno boulevards. Phase 1 of the project, which has already begun, consists of ripping up the concrete medians, adding dirt and Belgian block, and relocating trees.

Phases 2 and 3 are slated to consist of a spring and fall planting period; various trees, bushes, flowers and other shrubbery will be planted during those times.

The beautification project will prove to create more alluring scenery for what is considered the major artery connecting Capodanno and Hylan.

The site, heavily used by motorists, also is adjacent to South and Midland beaches and close to South Beach Psychiatric Center, University Hospital, homes and various medical facilities.
